It allows data and instructions to travel from the CPU to other components throughout the motherboard and back again to the CPU. Like a freeway, the bus is divided up into lanes. Each lane can carry one character or 8 bits of data. An 8-bit bus can carry one character, a 16-bit bus, two characters, and a 32-bit bus, four characters.
